Sculpture is one of the highest artistic expressions in Valle D'Aosta. The materials used are wood and steatite.
The sculptures usually
represent saints, scenes from daily life, masques, Valdostan fauna, but also useful everyday articles, all handcrafted.
A wrought iron working tradition also developed locally, due to mining for magnetite at Cogne and charcoal for the
forges from local
forests. The workmanship produced objects for everyday use, as well as decorative works, like the Pomegranate
Fountain in the courtyard
of the Castle of Issogne.
