Noir in Festival
In December, Courmayeur Noir in Festival takes place: an important noir, thriller, detective, and crime cinema review. This festival explores the connections between cinema and literature, proposing classical as well as new trends of this popular genre. Besides the projections, this exhibition organizes meetings with directors and authors, books presentations and debates.
Guides Feast
On 15th August Courmayeur celebrates the Mountain Guides. This is an opportunity to relive the ascents that Valdostan guides have organized, with talks on safety and games for the younger participants, so that they may get a taste of mountain life. This day of celebration starts with a parade to the cemetery and a ceremony remembering guides who have died, and those who have been lost in the mountains. This is followed by an outdoor Mass in Abbé Henry square, including the blessing of ropes and ice-axes. After this the traditional parade goes along the city's main road, Via Roma.
International Festival of Celtic Music and Art
During the summer, the International Festival of Celtic Music, Art and Culture takes place in Courmayeur and attracts a large number of people who are interested in Celtic culture. The centre of this event is in Val Veny, at the foot of Mont Blanc, but other events take place in other parts of the Valley and in Chamonix, France.
Saint Orso Fair
Every year since Medieval times, on January 30th and 31st, the Saint Orso Fair, the Alps' most important handcrafts fair, takes place in Aosta. Dedicated to the city's Patron Saint, it fills the city's streets with over a thousand exhibitors, who present the valley's varied handcraft products.
Batailles des reines
On the third Sunday of October in the arena of Croix Noir, near Aosta, the finals of the Battle of Queens are held. This is a peaceful conflict between cows of the Valle d'Aosta breed, and establishes the hierarchy within each herd. A tournament is organized with preliminary heats, leading to the regional finals.
